3D Geometric Sand Sculptures

Using a variety of 3D geometric shapes such as prisms, pyramids, cylinders, spheres and cones; artist Calvin Seibert creates wonderful sand sculptures that are not quite ‘castles’ but much more than just randomly placed building blocks.

 

Luckily for us, Calvin immortalized his pieces through photography so we can all enjoy his fantastic creations!

Graffiti Meets Sculpture

Graffiti meets sculpture in colorful figures that explode through the canvas 

A French artist is blending graffiti, sculpture and traditional painting to create a series of stunning artworks that literally jump out of the canvas.

Marchal Mithouard, whose tag name is Shaka, uses a variety of everyday objects for his striking pieces which feature aggressive figures portrayed in stunning vibrant colours.

The technique, known as bas-relief, involves making certain elements of the work more prominent than others by either carving away material or adding new layers. It is not new having been used widely in Italy during the Renaissance and even earlier in other parts of the world.

Maijishan Grottoes in China

 The Maijishan Grottoes are a series of 194 caves cut in the side of the hill of Majishan in Tianshui, Gansu Province, northwest China. This example of rock cut architecture contains over 7,200 Buddhist sculptures and over 1,000 square meters of murals. Construction began in the Later Qin era (384-417 CE).

Jamie Salmon is a British born, self taught contemporary sculptor, living and working in Vancouver, Canada. He started his career working as a commercial artist and sculptor for the movie effects industry. He specializes in hyper-realist sculpture, both figurative and portrait, utilizing such materials as silicone rubber, resin, hair and fabric.

Jamie says of his working process: “I want to make something that tells a story or moves people in some sort of way, not something that just looks very real. Of course, I need my works to have a certain degree of reality about them, but it`s more of a heightened reality. This is also why I like to play with scale in a lot of my works as well. I think it is something that catches people off guard and forces them to confront their ideas about reality, and to also think about the idea behind the work more deeply. Maybe more so than they would do if the piece were just life size.”

Bulgarian artist Plamen Ignatov used that many matches and spent that much time to create this impressive miniature model of the Rila Monastery. Made of wood, matches and gems, it's now on display at the Museum of Archaeological in Sofia, Bulgaria.

The Rila Monastery is the largest and most famous Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria. It is regarded as one of Bulgaria's most important cultural, historical and architectural monuments and is a key tourist attraction for both Bulgaria and Southern Europe. It has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
