Famous Island Owners


There is nothing more exclusive and sought after in the world than having your own private island; it becomes effectively your own little kingdom. Owning an island is the ultimate status symbol; apart from that,   who are always in the public eye.

Marlon Brando- Tetiaroa, French Polynesia, Tahiti

Marlon Brando first “discovered” Tetiaroa in the early 1960′s while scouting locations for the classic film “Mutiny on the Bounty”. The atoll is located 33 miles (53 km) north of Tahiti. The atoll stretches on a total surface of 2.3 square miles (6 square km); approximately 1,445 acres (585 hectares) of sand are divided in 13 motus (islets) with varying surface areas. The lagoon is approximately 4.5 miles (7 km) wide and 100 feet (30 meters) deep. The atoll has no reef opening, making access by boat nearly impossible.

Nicholas Cage – Leaf Cay, Bahamas

2006 Nicholas Cage purchased this Bahamian island for $3 million. He already owned a luxurious home on Paradise Island. Leaf Cay is part of the Exuma chain of islands with tropical palms, long sandy beaches and a freshwater pond. This 40-acres is nothing less than a paradise.

Johnny Depp- Little Halls Pond Cay, Bahamas

This 45-acre, one mile long isle is a private island and is part of the Exuma archipelago to the south of Bahamas. It costed him $3.6 million and boasts of the world’s most beautiful reefs, a private harbor, a palm-fringed lagoon and six pristine white sand beaches and is accessible only by a boat, helicopter or seaplane.

Leonardo DiCaprio – Blackadore Cay, Belize

Leonardo DiCaprio purchased this sprawling 104-acre, 202 mile long Belizean island in 2005 for $1.75 million. This beautiful island with white sand beaches, coconut trees and rocky outcrops is located near the famous Barrier Reef.

Celine Dion – Île Gagnon, Quebec

This one is nothing like other expensive tropical celebrity islands. This is a little island located in Celine Dion’s home province of Quebec. It is unpretentious, in spite of her being one of the highest paid female performers in history. Located in the Mille Île’s River, her huge French-style chateau is a famous tourist attraction; although, people can only get as close as a boat can take them to this heavily fenced mansion.

Mel Gibson – Mago Island, Fiji

Mel Gibson, himself an Australian, has joined the list of Fijian island owners with the purchase of Mago Island in 2005 for about $15 million. The island is 5,400 acres and is one of the largest private owned islands in the South Pacific.

Ricky Martin – Angra dos Reis, Brazil

Livin’ la Vida Loca singer Ricky Martin is certainly livin’ the high life after bagging a private island in the ultra-exclusive resort area of Angra dos Reis, where South America’s gorgeous and glamorous flock in their droves.

Michael Schumacher- Island in the World, Dubai

Possibly the most ambitious of Dubai’s land reclamation projects, The World is an archipelago of 300 islands laid out to represent countries of the world. The first developed island is owned by Formula 1 driver Michael Schumacher. The $7 million piece of land was gifted to him by Dubai’s crown prince, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and is located in the Arctic.

Robin Williams- Island in Pender Harbour, British Columbia

The frenetic star of countless comedies and dramas, Robin Williams owns an island in Pender Harbor, British Columbia, Canada.

Shakira- Bonds Cay, Bahamas

Nothing less than the sprawling 700 acre island called Bonds Cay satisfies Shakira. This huge island costed $16 million and is a combined property of Shakira, Roger Waters of Pink Floyd and Alejandro Sanz the Spanish pop star.

Eddie Murphy – Rooster Cay, Bahamas

Eddie Murphy is one of the highest paid actors, so it is only natural that he owns an unspoiled paradise, Rooster Cay, which is also known as Long Cay. He bought this little isle in 2007 for $15 million and it is just a few minutes away from Nassau.

David Copperfield – Musha Cay, Bahamas

Magician David Copperfield owns four islands in southern Bahamas, for $50 million. While the 150-acre Musha Cay is where he has his most private resort, the three other islands are used as buffers to ensure maximum privacy. He rents out this island for $325,000 per week and celebrities such as John Travolta and Oprah Winfrey have stayed there.
