Go back just one generation and you're in an alternative universe where smoking was promoted as a suitable pass time for doctors, and a young Ronald Reagan claimed he would send cigarettes to his friends at Christmas.
However, a backlash was brewing even while these glamorous posters were in their heyday. In 1962 the Royal College of Physicians were recommending stricter laws on the sale and advertising of tobacco and TV adverts were banned by 1965.

In 1971 the first health warnings appeared on cigarette packets and by 1986 you could no longer show a person smoking on a tobacco advert. A general advertising ban came into force in 2003.

World’s First Digital Camera (1975): Created by Kodak's engineer Steve Sasson



In December 1975, Kodak engineer Steve Sasson invented something that would, decades later, revolutionize photography: the world’s first digital camera. It was the size of a toaster, and captured black and white images at a resolution of 100×100 - or 0.01 megapixels in today’s marketing terminology. The images were stored on cassette tape, taking 23 seconds to write. The camera uses an ADC from Motorola, a bog-standard (for the 1970s) lens from a Kodak movie camera, and a CCD chip from Fairchild Semiconductor - the same technology that digital cameras still use today. To playback the images, a special computer and tape reader setup (pictured below) was built, outputting the grainy images on a standard TV. It took a further 23 seconds to read each image from tape.

Amul, India's number 1 brand, also scores high on its witty, rib-tickling advertisements that like wine just keep getting better with time. The company has been running its popular advertising campaign since 1966, taking fond potshots at the nation's political, social, sporting and filmy arenas. For decades, the cute Amul girl has entertained us with her one-liners. She laughed with us, cried with us and been there through every defeat and triumphs. Here's a look at some of the most telling advertisements in the first four months of 2012:

Mighty Predators- Largest Owl Species Of The World

Owls are a group of birds that belong to the order Strigiformes, constituting 200 extant bird of prey species. They are found in all regions of the Earth except Antarctica, most of Greenland and some remote islands. Most owls are nocturnal, actively hunting their prey only in water and darkness. Several types of owl, however, are crepuscular—active during the twilight hours of dawn and dusk. An owl’s sharp beak and powerful talons allow it to kill its prey before swallowing it whole (if it is not too big). The largest owl by length is the Great Grey Owl, which measures around 70 cm (28 in) on average and can attain a length of 84 cm (33 in). However, the heaviest (and largest winged) owls are two similarly-sized eagle owls; the Eurasian Eagle-Owl and Blakiston’s Fish Owl . These two species, which are on average about 2.53 cm (1.00 in) shorter in length than the Great Grey, can both attain a wingspan of 2 m (6.6 ft) and a weight of 4.5 kg (10 lb) in the largest females.

Human beings are an amazing species. Given enough time, they will multiply, relocate and establish even on the most remote corners of the world. The following islands, I’m sure, were once uninhabited full of lush green forest, beautiful beaches and perhaps an animal or two. Today, entire cities stands on them. But unlike communities on mainland, land and resources on an island are scarce. With no space to grow geographically these islands are crushingly dense with people and housing.
