Religious Thought 58
Who is this Self on whom we meditate? Is it the Self by which we see, hear, smell, and taste, Through which we speak in words? Is Self the mind By which we perceive, direct, understand, Know, remember, think, will, desire, and love? These are but servants of the Self, who is Pure consciousness. This Self is all in all. He is all the gods, the five elements, Earth, air, fire, water, and space; all creatures, Great or small, born of eggs, of wombs, of heat, Of shoots; horses, cows, elephants, men, and women; All beings that walk, all beings that fly, And all that neither walk nor fly. Prajna Is pure consciousness, guiding all. The world Rests on prajna, and prajna is Brahman.

I come from the East, most of you [here] are Westerners. If I look at you superficially, we are different, and if I put my emphasis on that level, we grow more distant. If I look on you as my own kind, as human beings like myself, with one nose, two eyes, and so forth, then automatically that distance is gone. We are the same human flesh. I want happiness; you also want happiness. From that mutual recognition, we can build respect and real trust of each other. From that can come cooperation and harmony.

Fear is like a candle whose flame helps a person distinguish goodness from evil; and fear of God allows a person to turn away from evil. Those who fear mere creatures flee from them; but those who fear God flee to Him.
