Mother nature has got a wicked sense of humor. She’s also fiercely protective of her creatures as famed wildlife photographer Alex Hyde discovered on his voyage into the world of animals that utilize camouflage for survival. The pictures are awesome and will have you wishing upon a silver star for the ability to blend in.
10 Facts About Elephants
10 Facts About Elephants
Elephants are a huge part of popular culture and show up as metaphors across all media. They form a part of religious beliefs and are often associated with wisdom or altruism. However, many people who live outside the normal range of elephants are unfamiliar with the many interesting facts about them. This list gives an overview of ten interesting areas about elephants.

Types of Elephant
In English, when we say ‘elephant,’ we are actually referring to several different species. Until 2010, only 2 species of elephant were scientifically recognized. However, genetic testing has revealed that there are at least 3 species. These are the Asian elephant alphas maximus, the African bush elephant loxodonta Africana (also called the savannah elephant), and the African forest elephant loxodonta cyclones. The Asian elephant is the smallest, and has small ears and tusks. They have two prominent bumps on their foreheads. They hold their heads more erect than both African elephants, have no protruding upper lip, and have a single short finger-like lip at the end of their trunk which they use for fine manipulation of objects. Both African elephants have larger ears, although the forest elephant has much rounder ears, are less hairy, have larger tusks, rounded foreheads, and have two finger-like lips on their trunks. The forest elephant has relatively straight, downward-pointing tusks whilst the bush elephant has magnificently curved ones. Most elephants are crepuscular, meaning that they are most active during dawn and evening, although this varies due to local climate. Unfortunately, all elephant species are endangered.

10 Largest Protected Areas in the World
A protected area is a designated location that has been preserved for its ecological, natural and/or cultural values. Governments work with conservationists to ensure that these areas continue to function naturally, with minimal (if any) human management. The preservation of many protected areas has stopped or slowed the extinction rate of several species. Currently, there are over 160,000 protected areas in the world that cover 10 to 15 percent of the world’s surface area (both land and sea).

Key benefits of apples Apples, known as a cleansing food, contain fibre, antioxidants and fruit flavonoids. The most important of the flavonoids contained in apples is quercetin, which has anti-inflammatory as well as anti-cancer actions. Apples contain vitamin C as well more so in green apples than in red ones. Apples can reduce blood cholesterol levels, counter constipation and diarrhoea, help joint problems and help prevent diseases in general. How much apples should you eat? Apples can be eaten freely, but more than two or three a day does not increase the health benefits. Large quantities of apple juice can encourage tooth decay and diarrhoea. Maximising the benefits of apples Apples are best eaten raw, as cooking them can reduce the flavonoids by as much as 70 percent into the cooking water. It is also a good idea to eat the apple unpeeled as flavonoids are contained in or near the skin. History will always remember that the first gramophone record in India was cut in 1902 and the singer was Gauhar Jan. It is believed that very few women, during those early days, ventured into recording. It was Gauhar Jan, an artist of considerable repute, who broke this taboo. She was called the Gramophone Girl and in some of the later records she was described as the Dancing Girl of Calcutta. That first record of hers turned a best seller. Thereafter, during 1902-1910, some 500 artists made recordings for the Gramophone Company. One of them was a teenage dancing girl called Achhan Bai. Here some songs recorded by her are presented to you, which are presumed the only ones left preserved. Take note of the announcements in first three songs.

Berries are full of antioxidants, vitamins and fibre. Anthocyanins, found in berries, have been shown to impede cancer cell growth, reduce risk of heart disease and diabetes.
Chicken breasts are low in saturated fat and calories. A 3-ounce serving of skinless chicken breast has 142 calories and 3 grams fat.
Fatty fishes such as Salmon, albacore tuna, mackerel, halibut and herring are high in omega-3 fatty acids. These help unclog arteries and improve levels of both triglycerides and HDL in diabetics.
Beans are good source of fibre and are rich in nutrients. They slow digestion and maintain blood sugar level after a meal.
Nuts are packed with `good` fats that not only help fight heart disease, but also help reduce insulin resistance. Nuts are also rich in fibre, magnesium and vitamin E.
Low-fat milk and yogurt not only provide protein but also give calcium, which aids in weight loss. People who take them regularly are less likely to become insulin resistant.
Whole-grain foods are rich in fibre and nutrients such as magnesium, chromium, folate and omega-3 fatty acids. Studies show that a diet rich in whole grains may help lower the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
Olive oil is loaded with antioxidants and monounsaturated fats, like oleic acid. These ‘good’ fats reduce the risk of heart disease and help keep blood sugar steady by reducing insulin resistance.

10 Bizarre Units of Measurement
When we compare things, the best way to do so is to measure their attributes. Which is more expensive? Which is taller? Which takes longer? From a very young age, children naturally begin to ask these questions when they are given choices. Today, 95% of the world uses the metric system, but this was not always so. A colorful variety of measurements have been used in the past. Many of these are easily recognized, however, there are some which are old-fashioned, foreign, or downright bizarre.

Barleycorn
A barleycorn was an Anglo-Saxon unit of length. It was originally the length of an actual barleycorn, but became standardized at what is now 8.5mm. The imperial inch measurement was originally called an ynch which was defined as being equal to three barleycorns. Rather nicely, a quarter of a barleycorn is called a poppyseed. Barleycorns are still used today as the unit of shoe sizes. A size 8 is 1 barleycorn larger than a size 7. Originally, the maximum size was set at 13 which was 13 inches exactly, and all other sizes were determined by counting in barleycorns backwards from 13. A size 4, by this system, would be 9 barleycorns less than 13 inches, that is, 10 inches or 25cm. These days sizing varies somewhat from country to country, but barleycorns are still used for shoe sizes in the UK and the USA.
